Description

The Guest List is a thriller novel of the year 2020 which is the latest work of English novelist Lucy Foley from Sussex, United Kingdom.

On the island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to attend an extravagant wedding of a handsome television star and an ambitious magazine publisher. Although the waves are a little choppy and cellphone services are spotty. Yet, It's a perfectly planned and executed wedding with a designer dress, remote location, four-tier cake, vintage champagne, luxe party favors, boutique whiskey, etc.

The novel contains characters such as:

The bride - The groom - The best man - The bridesmaid - The wedding planner - The body

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentment and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.

Everyone on the island has a secret. Everyone has a motive. And someone won't leave this wedding alive... Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

The story is told from multiple perspectives across two timelines, the present and two days before the wedding. Despite it sounding confusing, the different character perspectives flow together quite smoothly to form a riveting narrative. The book isn't a fast-paced thriller with constant shocks to keep you hooked but a slow burn reveals, where an overlooked word might have clued you into the murderer. Even those who read a lot of mysteries will have a hard time guessing the murderer of this book, making it a great read for all mystery lovers.

The novel was a pick for Reese's book club, The New York Times Bestseller, One of the New York Times Best Thriller of 2020. It won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Mystery and Thriller

" I loved this book. It gave me the same waves of happiness I get from curling up with a classic Christie... The alternating points of view keep you guessing, and guessing wrong." -- Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

"Evoke(s) The great Agatha Christie classics... Pay close attention to seemingly throwaway details about the characters' pasts. They are all clues."-- New York Times Book Review
