A Game of Thrones (1996) is the first novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by the American author George R.R. Martin. It was first published on August 1, 1996. The novel won the Locus Award (1997) and was nominated for both Nebula Award and World Fantasy Award for the same year.

George Raymond Richard Martin, also known as GRRM, was born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He is an American novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and television producer of horror, fantasy, and science fiction genre. He is the author of popular novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into the Emmy Award-winning HBO series Game of Thrones (2011-2019).
In 2005, he was called 'The American Tolkien" by Lev Grossman of Time, and in 2011, he was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
