Escape from Harem (2013), is the novel of an Indian author Tanushree Podder, who tells the story of Zeenat and the night that changed her life. The story gives us a preview of the Mughal dynasty, its culture, and its way of life. Tanushree spots the light on some unknown and less important facts (in the eye of historians) from the history of great conquerors through the journey of the girl who is taken to the harem. This book reveals the dark side of the dynasty--the harem, massacre, filicide, fratricide, animalistic behaviors of emperors, and the oppressive treatment of the women of the era between 1610 to 1650.
On that dark and fateful winter night, Zeenat was pushed into the Mughar emperor's harem so she could satisfy his lust. Her life changed that night, she goes to indolent Jahangir's harem to rebellion Shah Jahan's golden age of architecture. She even visits Jahanara's boudoir. Her life is a dizzy string of events with both sad and happy moments. Those soft moments of romance, passion, and times of aggression.
