"Mary Renault lives again! A ravishingly vivid and convincing version of one of the most legendary of love stories."-- Emma Donoghue, New York Times bestselling author of Room
A thrilling, profoundly moving, and utterly unique retelling of the legend of Achilles and the Trojan War from the bestselling author of Circe
The Song of Achilles is a 2011 novel by American writer Madeline Miller. Set during the Greek Heroic Age, it is a loose adaptation of Homer's Iliad as told from the perspective of Patroclus. The novel follows Patroclus' relationship with Achilles, from their initial meeting to their exploits during the Trojan War, with a particular focus on their romantic relationship. The Song of Achilles was awarded the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2012.
Greece is the age of heroes and it is a tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and human hearts. Patroclus, a young prince, has been exiled from his homeland 'Kingdom of Phthia' after an act of killing someone accidentally. He is living as nobody, he is just another unwanted boy living in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles.
Achilles, "best of all the Greeks," is everything Patroclus is not--strong, beautiful, the child of the sea goddess--and by all rights, their paths should never cross. Yet one day, Achilles takes the shamed prince under his wing and soon their tentative connection gives way to a steadfast friendship. As they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine. They forge an inseparable bond, despite risking God's wrath and the displeasure of Achilles' mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
Fate is never far from the heels of Achilles. When Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy that led to Trojan War. Achilles joins the war, He is torn between love and fear for his friends. Patroclus follows him into war. And before he is ready, he will be forced to surrender his friend to the hands of Fate.
This rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling stroke of the imagination that features a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings-- peace and glory.
