Every gift has a price.
The dead try to communicate with Odd Thomas because of his unique ability to understand the dead. 'Is it a gift or a curse'-he never understood. This time he is approached by a ghost of a young girl who was brutally raped and murdered, psychically led to her killer, a former schoolmate named Harlo Landerson. Koontz unveils Odd's dysfunctional upbringing, layer by layer, that has shaped his life and his supernatural abilities begin to make more sense.
While working as a short-order cook in the California desert town, Odd meets a suspicious-looking man in the diner followed by bodachs, a shadowy spirit creature who appears only during times of death and disaster. Odd is convinced that this 'Fungus Man', nicknamed by Odd, is connected to some terrible catastrophe that is about to occur. Odd's sixth sense leads him to Fungus Man's home and begins to uncover a mysterious other-worldly link to the dark forces that about to be unleashed on the town of Pico Mundo. Odd is soon deeply involved in an attempt to prevent the disastrous bloodshed he knows will happen the next day.
